Alireza Abdi, Activist on Clubhouse, Arrested by Security Forces at His Home in Tehran

On Saturday, security forces raided the home of Alireza Abdi and arrested him. Mr. Abdi, a former political prisoner, was active on Clubhouse. The charges and reasons for his arrest are still unclear, and it is unknown where he is being held. This political activist had tweeted two weeks ago on the anniversary of the Green Movement protests in 2009: 'The year the bottle caps smelled of Kahrizak, how much I want a full stomach to cry.' He also wrote after a wave of death sentences was issued: 'I, Alireza Abdi, from inside Iran with my real and clear identity, openly say that I oppose the death penalty for any crime and I am willing to do whatever I can to abolish the death penalty.' This is not the first case of arrests of Clubhouse activists in Tehran; previously, Sayeh Seydal, Danial Amin, and Sarvnaz Misaqian had also been arrested. While some political activists close to the government are active on Clubhouse, government critics are not safe from arrest. One of those previously arrested for Clubhouse activities was Hossein Razagh, one of the founders of the Freedom Square room.
