American Journalist Remains Detained; US Ambassador Criticizes Russia's 'Hostage Diplomacy'

If convicted, Gershkovich could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. In court, he smiled at reporters while standing in a glass box, wearing blue jeans and a black t-shirt. His parents, Mikhail Gershkovich and Ella Milman, who left the former Soviet Union for the US in 1979, were present in court to support him. The judge's decision was not surprising after the court rejected a previous request from Gershkovich's lawyers in April for house arrest, movement restrictions, or bail. The Wall Street Journal expressed anger at the continued detention of their reporter, noting they expected such a result. The Kremlin claims that the 31-year-old Gershkovich was detained during a trip to Yekaterinburg in the Ural region, where the FSB security service alleged he was seeking military documents. Moscow has not provided details about this claim, which the Wall Street Journal strongly denies. Lynn Tracy, the US ambassador to Russia, who was not allowed to attend the court session, expressed her disappointment at the judge's decision. Tracy praised Gershkovich for his 'remarkable strength and resilience' and reiterated the US position that the charges against him are baseless. She stated, 'Gershkovich is an innocent journalist who was doing journalism and has been wrongfully detained. Such hostage diplomacy is unacceptable.' Russia has previously agreed to exchange prominent prisoners with the US, the last being last year when basketball star Brittney Griner was convicted on drug charges and exchanged for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout. Moscow has stated that no exchange regarding Gershkovich is possible until a verdict is issued. No date has been set for his trial so far.
