American Senators Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Intensify Oil Sanctions on the Islamic Republic

The office of Republican Senator Joni Ernst announced on Thursday that American senators from both parties are drafting a legislative proposal to assist the federal government in "intensifying oil sanctions on the Islamic Republic." According to Reuters, Joni Ernst, a Republican senator, and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal are proposing a plan to create a $150 million fund to enforce sanctions against the Islamic Republic. This fund will assist the Homeland Security Investigations office in seizing Iranian oil shipments that are in violation of sanctions. Previously, the Homeland Security Investigations office conducted investigations that led to the seizure of two shipments of oil from the Islamic Republic. This proposal comes in response to the October 7 attacks on Israel by Hamas, which is supported by Iran. The aim of this legislation is to provide necessary resources for the Homeland Security Investigations office to combat Iranian oil smuggling. According to the report, the goal of this bipartisan law is to secure essential resources for the Homeland Security Investigations office to fight against the oil smuggling of the Islamic Republic, an activity that has continued despite U.S. sanctions on the Islamic Republic's nuclear program. Additionally, this bill specifies how the seized oil resources will be allocated, part of which will benefit the fund for supporting victims of state-sponsored terrorism. The United States revealed on Friday, September 8, that it disrupted the shipment of a multi-million dollar oil cargo by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in April of this year and seized over 980,000 barrels of smuggled crude oil, which is considered a violation of U.S. sanctions. Reuters reported in April that the United States seized the oil tanker "Suez Rajan," which was carrying oil from the Islamic Republic at sea. This action by the U.S. is part of its efforts to counter the oil exports of the Islamic Republic, which are prohibited under U.S. sanctions.
