Amnesty International Calls for 'Immediate and Unconditional Release' of Reza Shahabi, Imprisoned Labor Activist

Amnesty International has called for the 'immediate and unconditional release' of Reza Shahabi, a labor activist imprisoned in Evin Prison. This human rights organization criticized his 'arbitrary detention' in Evin Prison and simultaneous 'denial of appropriate and timely medical services' on Friday, June 15. Reza Shahabi, a member of the Syndicate of Workers of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company, was transferred to the hospital on June 9 due to severe pain, numbness, and immobility in the toes of his right foot. A specialist doctor, after examination, suggested a severe narrowing of the spinal canal and a herniated disc, ordering an MRI and complete rest. Amnesty International emphasized that Reza Shahabi should have access to the specialized medical services he needs, including transfer to medical facilities outside the prison. The international organization further stated: 'Iranian authorities continue to prevent independent trade union activities, violating their commitments to international law and retaliating against workers and labor rights activists through actions such as unfair trials and imprisonment.' Amnesty International has again called for the 'immediate and unconditional release' of all those who have been 'arbitrarily detained' solely for exercising their right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, including through labor activities. The International Confederation of Trade Unions, in its 2024 report, has placed Iran among the countries where trade union rights are not guaranteed and are not respected. Reza Shahabi, the imprisoned worker, was transferred to the hospital due to the deterioration of his health condition.
