Amnesty International Calls for Immediate Cancellation of Death Sentence for Varisheh Moradi

On Tuesday, December 6, 1403, Amnesty International issued a statement criticizing the death sentence issued for Varisheh Moradi, an Iranian political activist, and called for an immediate halt to this sentence. The international organization deemed Moradi's trial 'unfair' and, noting the violation of his rights during detention, urged Iranian authorities to immediately stop the death sentence, annul Moradi's conviction, and release him without delay. In its statement, Amnesty International also called on the Islamic Republic to impartially investigate reports of torture and mistreatment of this political activist and to ensure that those responsible are tried in fair courts, as well as guaranteeing his access to appropriate medical care and visits with his family and lawyers. Varisheh Moradi, a 39-year-old political prisoner, was sentenced to death on November 20, 1403, by Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court on charges of 'baghi' (armed rebellion against the government). He was arrested on July 31, 1402, in the suburbs of Sanandaj and transferred to the women's section of Evin Prison on December 26, 1402, after the interrogation phase was completed at the Ministry of Intelligence detention center known as Ward 209. This political prison revealed in an open letter from prison that during his detention, he was subjected to physical and psychological torture, threats of execution, and gender-based violence.
