Amnesty International Calls for the Release of Johan Flodros, Swedish EU Diplomat, in Iran

On Thursday, October 19, Amnesty International urged the Islamic Republic to immediately release Johan Flodros, a Swedish employee of the European Union's diplomatic service, who was arrested and imprisoned in Iran earlier this year in April. Amnesty International stated on the social media platform 'X' that the Islamic Republic has 'arbitrarily detained and taken hostage' this Swedish national since April 17. The organization accused the Islamic Republic of attempting to exchange Mr. Flodros for Hamid Noury, who was tried in Sweden and sentenced to a long prison term for his involvement in the executions of the 1980s. Previously, Masoud Setayesh, the spokesperson for the Islamic Republic's judiciary, announced on Tuesday, September 12, that a Swedish citizen is currently imprisoned and that his case would be sent to court 'with the final decision of the prosecutor's office.' He did not mention the name of the Swedish citizen but added that he 'committed crimes in the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran for which preliminary investigations have been conducted, and he has been sent to prison based on legal grounds.' However, this judiciary official did not specify the charges against the Swedish citizen. Following the news of Mr. Flodros's arrest in Iran, speculation intensified regarding the possibility that the Islamic Republic might use this Swedish detainee to exert pressure on Stockholm or to exchange him for Hamid Noury. Human rights defenders claim that the Islamic Republic uses the detention of foreign and dual nationals for 'extortion' from Western countries, a claim that Iranian officials deny. Meanwhile, Kazem Gharibabadi, the secretary of a group known as the 'Human Rights Headquarters' of the Islamic Republic, referred in an interview with the 'Al-Alam' network to the case of Hamid Noury, who was tried and sentenced to a long prison term in Sweden for his participation in the executions of the 1980s, and threatened the judiciary of that country, stating: 'We hope that the Swedish judiciary ultimately takes a correct position and decision, and in this regard, we are not idle and will utilize our capacities for appropriate actions.' The Islamic Republic has requested the extradition of 'Hamid Noury' from Sweden. The Islamic Republic's judiciary confirmed the arrest of the Swedish citizen in Iran. The European Union expressed serious concern about the situation of the detained Swedish diplomat in Iran. The family of the imprisoned Swedish diplomat in Iran called for his immediate release. Hanna Neumann called for clarification from the European Union regarding the 'concealment' of the arrest of the Swedish citizen. Josep Borrell confirmed that the 'Swedish citizen' detained in Iran has a history of work with the European Union.
