Amnesty International Expresses Concern for the Safety of Simin Mohammadi

Amnesty International expresses its concern for the safety of Simin Mohammadi, who is reportedly in solitary confinement in Evin Prison. She is deprived of legal representation, raising fears that she may be subjected to torture and mistreatment in prison. Amnesty International believes that Simin Mohammadi's arrest is linked to her being the sister of Manoochehr Mohammadi, a student movement activist who has been imprisoned since 1999. According to a family member, Simin Mohammadi and her father, Mohammad Mohammadi, traveled from Amol in northern Iran to Tehran to obtain information about Manoochehr Mohammadi's status. On July 8, while walking in Enghelab Square near Tehran University, they were suddenly separated by a group of plainclothes individuals and taken to Evin Prison in two separate vehicles. Upon arrival, Mohammad Mohammadi was sent to solitary confinement, where he suffered a heart attack the same day and was taken to the hospital, where he remained for three days under medical examination and supervision by Evin officials. After posting bail, he was transferred to a hospital in Amol to allow his wife to visit him. Reports indicate that he must appear in the Revolutionary Court for questioning at the scheduled time. On July 11, Simin Mohammadi was allowed to speak to her mother by phone to inform her of her arrest. The Revolutionary Court officials have demanded 10 million tomans (equivalent to 12 thousand US dollars) in bail for her temporary release. Meanwhile, no further information is available regarding the current status of Manoochehr Mohammadi.
