Amnesty International Warns Against the Execution of 10 Death Sentences Related to Protests in Iran

On Thursday, December 20, Amnesty International issued an "urgent action call" urging people and activists to send letters to the judiciary of the Islamic Republic to prevent the execution of 10 more death sentences related to the nationwide protests of 2022. The call mentions Fazl Bahramian, Manoochehr Mehman-Navaaz, Mehran Bahramian, Milad Armon, Alireza Kafaee, Amir Mohammad Khush Eghbal, Navid Najaran, Hossein Nemati, Alireza Bamrazpournik, and Mehrab (Mehran) Abdollazadeh. This international human rights organization emphasized the need to annul the issued sentences, stating that these individuals were tried based on accusations such as Moharebeh (waging war against God) and Baghi (rebellion), and that their trial processes were unfair. In its call, the organization asked everyone to send a letter similar to the one it published to the Islamic Republic's representations worldwide by April 19, 2025, demanding the abolition of death sentences in Iran, especially for detained protesters. Amnesty International also highlighted existing evidence of the beating of prisoners, use of electric shocks, suffocation, sexual violence, and deliberate deprivation of healthcare, calling for fair trials in accordance with international standards without resorting to the death penalty for these defendants and emphasizing the need for the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees from the protests in Iran. Earlier, on Tuesday, December 18, the United Nations General Assembly approved a resolution condemning human rights violations in the Islamic Republic of Iran with 80 votes in favor, 27 against, and 68 abstentions. Member states of the United Nations severely criticized "executions and imprisonment on charges of apostasy and insulting sacred values" in the Islamic Republic, as well as condemning the execution of ethnic and religious minorities and women. The judiciary of the Islamic Republic executed two prisoners in Mahabad and at least six others in Qazalhesar by the judicial authorities of the Islamic Republic. The resolution condemning human rights violations in Iran was approved by the UN General Assembly. The campaign "Tuesdays No to Execution": 40 executions were carried out last week.
