Amnesty International's Open Letter to Mohseni Ejei; Cancel the Death Sentence of Mohammad Qabadi

On Friday, June 16, Amnesty International sent an open letter to Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, the head of the judiciary of the Islamic Republic, demanding the immediate cancellation of two death sentences issued for Mohammad Qabadi. According to the letter, Amnesty International has obtained information indicating that Mr. Qabadi's right to a fair trial has been grossly violated. The denial of access to a lawyer during the preliminary investigations, severe torture, preventing him from accessing medications related to his bipolar disorder, and coercing him into confessing to the murder of several security officials are among the violations of Mr. Qabadi's rights during the trial. Another serious violation of Mohammad Qabadi's rights, according to Amnesty International's letter, is the refusal of judicial authorities to issue an order for assessing his mental state, which, according to his family and lawyer, absolves him of responsibility. Amnesty International stated that international laws and standards prohibit the execution of individuals with mental disabilities. The organization has urged Mohseni Ejei to immediately cancel Mohammad Qabadi's death sentence, provide him with immediate and appropriate mental health treatment, and ensure regular access to his lawyer and family. This international human rights organization has also called for an independent and impartial investigation into the torture and mistreatment he has suffered and to hold those responsible accountable. Mr. Qabadi's lawyer reported on May 23 that their appeal against the death sentence issued for his client on charges of 'murder' was rejected by the first branch of the Supreme Court, which was issued on December 24 of last year and confirmed by the Supreme Court in late April of this year. Additionally, the second death sentence for Mohammad Qabadi on charges of 'corruption on earth' was issued on November 16 of last year and confirmed by the Supreme Court on December 24, with the appeal for this sentence still under consideration. These two death sentences were issued for allegedly running over a security force member during protests following the death of Mahsa (Zhina) Amini on September 22 of last year in Robat Karim.
