An American Soldier Imprisoned in Russia Sentenced to Nearly Four Years

An American soldier in Russia has been sentenced to three years and nine months in prison on charges of "theft and threats of murder." Gordon Black, a 34-year-old American soldier who traveled to Russia to visit his girlfriend, was arrested last month on these charges. Russian news agencies reported on Wednesday, June 30, that the Vladivostok court, a city in eastern Russia, sentenced him to prison and a fine of $115. According to Sputnik news agency, his girlfriend, Alexandrea Vashchuk, called the police after an argument. Reports have accused Mr. Black of "stealing 100 euros" from Ms. Vashchuk and threatening her during the dispute. Ms. Vashchuk told reporters earlier this month that "this was a simple domestic dispute during which Black attacked her aggressively." She stated, "He then took money from my wallet without permission." American officials have said that Black is married and met Ms. Vashchuk in South Korea. Mr. Black was returning from his military mission in South Korea to the U.S. when he changed his route to travel through China to eastern Russia to meet his girlfriend. According to Pentagon regulations, American military personnel must obtain permission from a security manager or commander for any international travel, a requirement that Mr. Black did not follow. Russia has detained several American citizens on various charges, including former Marine Paul Whelan and Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. The U.S. has described the detention of its citizens in Russia as "wrong and arbitrary" and has called for negotiations with Russia for their release. Mr. Black's prison sentence could escalate the tense relations between Moscow and Washington. Several Russian citizens are also detained in the U.S. for violating arms sanctions against Russia, and observers say Russia detains American citizens for prisoner exchanges, a tactic also used by the Islamic Republic of Iran to exchange its own prisoners or gain economic concessions from foreign countries. The U.S. State Department has strongly advised its citizens to avoid travel to Russia.
