According to the agency, in the province of Zanjan in the north-west of Iran, a powerful explosion occurred while trying to defuse unexploded ordnance left after the American-Israeli airstrikes. As a result of the incident, 14 soldiers of the elite unit were killed. Two more were injured.
The cause of the tragedy was the detonation of an unknown unexploded ordnance left after the American-Israeli airstrikes during the military conflict.
According to the Iranian media, we are talking about cluster bombs and aerial mines dropped during the fighting. Dangerous items pose a serious threat not only to military sappers, but also to civilians: it is reported that about 1,200 hectares of agricultural land in the province of Zanjan are contaminated with explosive residues.
This incident was the largest one-time loss among the IRGC personnel since the establishment of the ceasefire on April 8, 2026.
The dead were among the most experienced, specially trained and qualified specialists of the IRGC engineering and sapper units. Since the beginning of the conflict, sappers have managed to detect and neutralize more than 15,000 unexploded ordnance throughout the country.
