Another Senator Supports Iran Nuclear Agreement

Jeff Merkley, a Democratic senator from Oregon, has joined the group of senators who have expressed their support for the comprehensive nuclear agreement between world powers and Iran. According to the Associated Press, Merkley is the 31st senator to announce his support for the agreement on Sunday. The Obama administration needs at least 34 senators' votes to ensure that a veto of the resolution rejecting the nuclear agreement in Congress remains in effect. Barack Obama has stated that if Congress approves the resolution to reject the nuclear agreement, he will veto it. If the number of supporters of the nuclear agreement in the U.S. Senate does not reach 34, the Republican-controlled Congress could override the President's veto. Republicans in Congress have unanimously expressed their opposition to the nuclear agreement with Iran. If the number of supporters in the Senate reaches 41, the resolution to reject the nuclear agreement may not even be put to a vote, thus eliminating the need for Obama's veto. The U.S. Congress is set to vote on the Iran nuclear agreement in mid-September, about two weeks from now. Extensive television and internet advertisements are urging lawmakers to vote negatively on this agreement, while some ads have also been published in support of the agreement.
