Anthony Albanese: Sale of US Nuclear Submarines to Australia is on the 'Right Track'

Anthony Albanese, the Prime Minister of Australia, expressed confidence that the sale of US nuclear submarines to Australia is on the right track ahead of discussions between his country's defense and foreign ministers and their American counterparts. On Thursday, 25 Republican lawmakers in the US told President Joe Biden that the plan to sell three attack submarines to Australia under the AUKUS agreement would unacceptably weaken the US fleet without a clear replacement plan. According to Reuters, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who are in Queensland, Australia for annual talks, will focus on progress in the nuclear submarine sale agreement, regional security, and clean energy. Albanese responded to a question about the Republican lawmakers' letter to Biden by stating he is 'very confident' about the agreement. In 2021, the US, UK, and Australia announced a trilateral defense agreement under which Australia would acquire nuclear submarine technology from the US. The Australian Prime Minister mentioned that he met with both Republicans and Democrats on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Lithuania this month and faced 'unified support' for the agreement. The US is Australia's main security ally and announced in March with the UK that it would sell three Virginia-class nuclear submarines to Australia in the early 2030s. Subsequently, the UK and Australia will produce a new type of submarine in the following decade. Richard Marles, the Australian Defense Minister, stated in an interview with Sky News that Australia has agreed to invest $3 billion in US submarine facilities. He added that despite existing challenges in the US, the trilateral agreement is 'on the right track.' Marles noted that this agreement would benefit all three countries and lead to the establishment of an industrial base in the country, enhancing the capabilities of Australia, the UK, and the US. Concerns regarding China's security ambitions in the Indian and Pacific Oceans will also be discussed by security allies over two days of talks. Before the meeting began, Lloyd Austin remarked, 'We have seen concerning Chinese presence from the East China Sea to the South China Sea, and all the way down to the southwest Pacific, and we will continue to support our allies and partners in defending against bullying.' Australia is reshaping its defense posture in response to China's military buildup and intends to enhance long-range strike capabilities, develop domestic missile production, and improve interoperability with the US and other regional militaries. Austin further stated that the expansion of defense relations, including efforts to integrate Japan into the joint forces initiative, will be discussed. Blinken: The doors are open for New Zealand to participate in the AUKUS military project. The trilateral agreement for the sale of nuclear submarines between the US, Australia, and the UK has been signed.
