Antony Blinken Travels to Egypt for Ceasefire Negotiations in Gaza

Antony Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of State, arrived in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday, September 28, marking his tenth trip to the Middle East since the Hamas militants' attack on Israel in October of last year. Upon his arrival in Cairo, Mr. Blinken met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. According to Reuters, Mr. Blinken hopes to strengthen efforts for a ceasefire agreement in Gaza during his visit to Egypt, amid concerns about escalating tensions in the Middle East, as well as to bolster bilateral relations with Cairo. The U.S. Secretary of State's trip comes in the wake of an explosion of pager devices in Lebanon on Tuesday, September 27, which resulted in at least nine deaths and around 3,000 injuries. Lebanese officials have pointed fingers at the two militant groups, Hezbollah and Hamas, and their supporter, the Islamic Republic, blaming Israel for the explosions. However, Israel has not claimed responsibility for these blasts so far. Meanwhile, a U.S. State Department spokesperson on Tuesday, following the explosion of thousands of pager devices used by Hezbollah members in Lebanon, urged the Islamic Republic to refrain from actions that would lead to 'further instability' and 'increased tensions.' Matthew Miller stated in a media briefing that it is still too early to say whether the incident in Lebanon will affect the Gaza ceasefire negotiations, but the United States believes that diplomacy is a way to reduce tensions. He mentioned that the agenda for Mr. Blinken's meetings with Egyptian officials is to ensure an agreement between Israel and Hamas for a ceasefire. Additionally, Reuters noted that the U.S. Secretary of State will not visit Israel during this trip, marking the first time he has not met with Washington's closest regional ally since the onset of the war in Gaza. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin discussed ongoing tensions in the Middle East and threats facing Israel, including a recent missile attack from Yemen's Houthis, in a phone call with his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant on Tuesday, September 27. He emphasized the need for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, as well as the importance of reducing tensions through diplomacy to prevent the possibility of broader conflict in the region. Blinken stated that Hamas endangers lives by hiding in civilian humanitarian locations.
