Appeal for Mahmoud Mehrabi; Babak Farsani: There are 10 fundamental flaws in my client's death sentence

The defense lawyer of Mahmoud Mehrabi, a political prisoner sentenced to death, stated that he has submitted and sent a request for appeal on behalf of his client. Babak Farsani, the defense attorney for Mahmoud Mehrabi, wrote on the social media platform X on Tuesday, June 7, that there are 'more than 10 fundamental flaws in the issued verdict,' each of which 'alone constitutes valid and documented reasons for the Supreme Court' to overturn the death sentence. According to this lawyer, the mentioned 10 issues are detailed 'in the numerous pages of the defense brief.' The fifth branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Isfahan sentenced Mahmoud Mehrabi, a detained protester, to 'death' in mid-April due to his activities on social media. In recent days, a group of United Nations experts, including Javaid Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, Jill Edwards, the Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, and Morris Tidball-Binz, the Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial or arbitrary executions, issued a statement calling for the immediate cancellation of Mahmoud Mehrabi's death sentence and urged the Iranian government to stop issuing death sentences against individuals for expressing their opinions. Meanwhile, the Mizan news agency, the media organ of the Iranian judiciary, denied that the death sentence for Mahmoud Mehrabi was 'due to activities on social media,' but in the same report explained that the content of Mehrabi's case was based on 'the publication of materials' on social media and claimed that these materials included 'instructions on the use of homemade weapons, calls for the destruction of public property, incitement to war and killing, and insults to sacred beliefs.' Hajar Mehrabi, the sister of this condemned protester, previously told Voice of America that Mahmoud Mehrabi was in Vienna but 'returned to Iran' and 'stood with empty hands and resisted' to be 'the voice of the people.' She stated that 'for more than 16 months,' Mahmoud Mehrabi has been 'tortured' in prison, adding: 'My brother is one of the thousands of nameless and oppressed prisoners who have no voice. Do not discriminate between political prisoners, and I ask you to be their voice. We have no one but each other.'
