Appeal of a Political Prisoner Sentenced to Death; Mojahid Korkori: Help Me and Save Me

Relatives of Abbas Korkori, known as Mojahid Korkori, a political prisoner sentenced to death whose execution was confirmed by the Supreme Court of the Islamic Republic and who is currently held in Shiban Prison in Ahvaz, say that he has requested help. Negar, Mojahid Korkori's sister, stated that this condemned protester said, 'Help me' and 'Save me,' writing on social media platform X: 'The hardest part of life is hearing your brother say help me, save me, and being unable to do anything.' In recent days, Negar Korkori also reported on the 'lack of contact rights, increased pressures, and psychological torture' on her brother, as well as his transfer back to solitary confinement, describing these restrictions as 'a new phase of the regime's games.' The family of this political prisoner at risk of execution had previously announced that they had been deprived of visitation rights with Mojahid Korkori. Additionally, it has been reported that Mojahid Korkori, a death-row prisoner in Ahvaz, has been deprived of 'telephone contact and visitation.' The death penalty for Mojahid Korkori was confirmed in Dey of last year by the Supreme Court of the Islamic Republic, and his case has been sent to the execution branch of the court in Izeh. This protesting citizen has been sentenced to death by the first branch of the Revolutionary Court of Ahvaz on charges including 'Moharebeh' (waging war against God) and 'efsad-e fel-arz' (corruption on earth). Islamic Republic officials have accused him of being involved in the deadly shooting on November 25, 2022, against citizens in Izeh during nationwide protests; a claim that the survivors and families of the victims of that incident, including the family of Kian Pirfalak, a 9-year-old child killed that day, have repeatedly denied. Meanwhile, the family of Kian Pirfalak has emphasized multiple times that their child was killed by government forces' gunfire and they have no complaints against Mojahid Korkori. Amnesty International has also identified government plainclothes agents as responsible for the deadly shooting of Kian Pirfalak based on its investigations. Nevertheless, the judiciary of the Islamic Republic insists on portraying Mojahid Korkori as the perpetrator of the attack on the Izeh market and the murder of Kian. Mahmoud Amiri-Moghaddam, director of Iran Human Rights, announced last week that 'in the past two weeks, the Islamic Republic has executed one person every five hours without incurring any costs.' On Wednesday, June 9, prisoners convicted of 'public crimes' in Qezel Hesar warned about the increasing number of executions, stating that 'between 10 to 20' prisoners are taken from there and killed each week. At the same time, Amnesty International, in its annual report on the death penalty worldwide, announced that the sharp increase of 48% in executions in Iran has contributed to a rise in global statistics. Human rights organizations and activists have previously warned about the risk of execution for several political prisoners and detainees from the nationwide protests in recent years, including Reza Rasayi, Mojahid Korkori, Habib Daris, and Abbas Daris. Raha Bahreini stated: 'The deprived people of Iran are the main victims of the Islamic Republic's executions; execution is never a deterrent.'
