Approval of the 'Mahsa Law' in the Senate; Additional U.S. Sanctions Against the Islamic Republic on the Way

The U.S. Senate has overwhelmingly approved the 'Mahsa Law', short for the 'Accountability for Human Rights and Security of Mahsa Amini Act'. This law, as part of a national security package passed by Congress on Tuesday evening, April 23, will be enacted after being sent to the White House and signed by the President of the United States. The 'Mahsa Law' mandates the U.S. President to impose sanctions in the form of visa bans and asset seizures for foreign nationals linked to Iran. Under this law, Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ebrahim Raisi, the President of Iran, and related entities will be sanctioned for 'human rights violations' and 'supporting terrorism'. With the approval of this national security package in the U.S. Senate, sanctions under the 'SHIP' law will also be implemented against financial resources arising from Iran's oil transactions. According to the 'SHIP' law, ports, ships, and refineries involved in transactions of sanctioned Iranian oil products, which are a source of significant profits for the Islamic Republic, will be sanctioned. The aim of the recent national security package passed in the U.S. Senate, which includes four separate bills, is to counter threats from the Islamic Republic, China, and Russia. These bills include $61 billion in aid for Ukraine against Russia, $26 billion in aid for Israel against Palestinian and regional hostile actors, and over $8 billion in aid for Taiwan to counter China's actions. The fourth bill includes funding for banning the 'TikTok' application, facilitating the transfer of seized Russian assets to Ukraine, and new punitive measures against the Islamic Republic, known as the 'Mahsa Law'. Chuck Schumer, the Democratic Senate Majority Leader, called the approval of the national security package a 'turning point' in history. Joe Biden, the President of the United States, also welcomed the passage of these bills in a statement, emphasizing Washington's firm support for democracy and freedom.
