Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul Music, Passes Away at 76

Aretha Franklin, the renowned American singer known as the 'Queen of Soul,' passed away on Thursday at the age of 76 at her home in Detroit, USA, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. According to a statement from her family, they described her death as 'one of the darkest moments of their lives,' stating, 'We lost the matriarch and rock of our family. Her love for her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews knew no bounds.' Aretha Franklin was born in 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee. Her father was a church preacher, which shaped her musical foundation in religious music. Franklin initially worked in the realm of church music, but by the mid-1960s, her music, a blend of gospel, soul, and rock, made her a superstar. Throughout her career, she won 18 prestigious Grammy Awards. This music icon was active in civil rights movements and sang at the funeral of Martin Luther King Jr., the leader of the African American civil rights movement, who was assassinated in 1968. Franklin also performed at the pre-inauguration ceremony for Bill Clinton and at Barack Obama's inauguration in 1993 and 2009, respectively. Following Franklin's death, many paid tribute to her on Twitter. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, tweeted, 'The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, has died. She was a great woman and God gave her an amazing gift; her voice. She will be missed!' Former President Barack Obama also wrote, 'Aretha defined the experience of being American. With her voice, we understood our history - our power and our pain, our dark and bright points, our struggle for redemption and the respect we earn through hard work. May the Queen of Soul rest in peace.' Paul McCartney, the former Beatles singer, tweeted, 'Let us take a moment to appreciate the beautiful life of Aretha Franklin, our Queen of Soul who inspired us for many years. Franklin last performed in November 2017 at Elton John's AIDS Foundation charity event, which was held to raise funds. Elton John recalled that event in a series of tweets: '...she clearly wasn't well and I wasn't sure she could perform. But Aretha performed and raised a lot of money... her performance and musicianship were magnificent and we all cried. We were watching the greatest soul artist of all time. I praised her and her talent.'
