Argentina Arrests Three Citizens from Lebanon and Syria on Suspicion of Terrorism Links

On Wednesday, Argentina's federal police and security minister announced the arrest of three individuals suspected of planning a terrorist attack in the country. Details regarding the identities of the detainees have not been released, but their nationalities have been identified as Lebanese and Syrian. According to Reuters, Argentine officials stated they are investigating the suspects' intentions for traveling to Argentina and a '35-kilogram package' that was sent from Yemen to one of the suspects in Argentina. Patricia Bullrich, Argentina's security minister, told reporters in Buenos Aires that the suspects had previously entered Argentina using passports from other countries and that their identities would not be disclosed until the charges against them are confirmed. The security minister, who began her role in Javier Milei's government on December 10, stated, 'Investigations are ongoing, and we will see whether a terrorist operational team has indeed come to Argentina or if it has another meaning.' The Argentine federal police released a statement indicating that there are signs that these three Syrian and Lebanese citizens were supposed to meet in Buenos Aires after arriving via different flights 'to plan a terrorist act.' The police did not specify the timing of their arrests. The news of the arrests comes two months after Brazilian federal police arrested at least three men after identifying a Hezbollah terrorist team supported by the Iranian government, based on information received from the U.S. federal police, the FBI. One of the detainees in Brazil had taken photos and videos of two synagogues and a Jewish cemetery in Brasília, the capital of Brazil. The Israeli embassy and the Jewish center in Argentina's Buenos Aires were targeted in two deadly attacks in March 1992 and July 1994, respectively. The bombing of the Argentine Jewish center (AMIA), which is known as the largest terrorist incident in Argentina, left 85 dead and 300 injured.
