Arrest of an Italian Journalist in Iran by the Islamic Republic

On Friday, December 29, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the arrest of Cecilia Sala, an Italian journalist, by Tehran police. According to the statement, this Italian citizen was engaged in journalistic activities at the time of her arrest in Iran. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that Antonio Tajani, the Foreign Minister, along with the embassy and consulate of Italy in Tehran, has been closely monitoring her situation since the beginning of her detention. The ministry is coordinating with the Prime Minister's office to clarify the legal status of this journalist and to investigate the conditions of her detention while consulting and cooperating with Iranian authorities. Cecilia Sala, the Italian journalist arrested by Tehran police since December 29, had her consular visit conducted by Paola Amadei, the Italian ambassador to Iran, to confirm the conditions and status of her detention, and her family was informed of the results of this visit. According to the statement, this journalist has spoken with her family twice by phone. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs concluded its statement by requesting media personnel, following an agreement with Cecilia Sala's family, to exercise 'maximum caution' to facilitate a swift and positive resolution to this matter. Sala's Instagram page, which has over 407,000 followers, indicates that she has traveled to Iran in recent years and shared photos and posts about the 'Women, Life, Freedom' protests and some injured individuals from those events. Many political experts say that the Islamic Republic of Iran uses baseless accusations to detain foreign citizens, especially dual nationals, and uses them as political bargaining chips, effectively taking these citizens hostage. The United States warns its citizens not to travel to dangerous countries, including Iran. Reza Valizadeh, an Iranian-American journalist, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. Nasrin Sotoudeh is serving a 3-year sentence in Evin Prison. Germany states that the Islamic Republic is responsible for the death of Jamshid Sharmehdi. Ahmadreza Jalali, a dual national prisoner at risk of execution in Evin, is on a hunger strike.
