Arrest of Pakistani National Accused of Attempting to Hire 'Hitman' on Behalf of the Islamic Republic

The U.S. government has charged a Pakistani national with ties to the Islamic Republic, accusing him of conspiring to hire mercenaries to kill American politicians and government officials. An informed American official stated, 'FBI investigators believe that Donald Trump and other current and former U.S. officials were the primary targets of this conspiracy.' The U.S. Department of Justice announced this on Tuesday, August 7. The accused, a 46-year-old named Asif Merchant, also reported as Asif Reza Merchant, has had his image released, and the Department of Justice stated that fortunately, the 'hitmen' that Asif Reza intended to hire were actually undercover agents of the FBI. The Department noted that this Pakistani national was born in Karachi and claims to reside in Pakistan, but has a wife and several children in Pakistan as well as a wife and several children in Iran. The Department has accused Asif Reza of intending to target an American politician or government official on U.S. soil. The statement from the Department of Justice indicates that law enforcement officers thwarted this Pakistani national's conspiracy before any attack could take place, and Asif Reza has been in federal custody since July 13. This is not the first time American officials have claimed to have thwarted similar plots by the Islamic Republic of Iran. In August 2022, American agents arrested an armed man with a Kalashnikov who was loitering outside the home of Masih Alinejad, a journalist and human rights activist, in Brooklyn, New York. His identity was reported as Khalid Mahdiyev, a citizen of Azerbaijan. The FBI is still investigating the case of Asif Reza Merchant.
