Arrest of Two Suspects in Plot to Attack Taylor Swift Concerts in Vienna

Three concerts by American singer Taylor Swift in Vienna, the capital of Austria, were canceled due to concerns about a planned attack on the concert venue. Two suspects have been arrested in this regard. Karl Nehammer, the Chancellor of Austria, wrote on social media platform X on Wednesday: "A tragedy was averted." He added that Austrian security and intelligence forces, along with the police, identified the security threat against the concert "early on" in "close cooperation" with foreign services. The organizer of Taylor Swift's concert also wrote in a post on Instagram that following the confirmation of this "planned terrorist attack" by the Austrian government, there was "no choice but to cancel the three planned concerts to ensure everyone's safety" at the Ernst Happel Stadium. Franz Ruf, the director general of public security in Austria, stated in a press conference that Austrian police arrested two individuals on Wednesday suspected of planning an attack on the concerts. Ruf said: "During our investigations, we identified preliminary actions and realized that a 19-year-old suspect had a particular focus on Taylor Swift's concerts in Vienna." He added that the suspect, who is an Austrian citizen, had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS). Another suspect was arrested afterward in Vienna. Police searched the residence of one of the suspects in the town of Trennitz, south of Vienna, and examined household items. Local media quoted police sources stating that three suspects are still at large. The three Taylor Swift concerts were scheduled to take place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of this week in Vienna. The police expected around 65,000 attendees each night, with an additional 15,000 people outside the stadium without tickets. The presence of such a large crowd raised security concerns. Last February, Taylor Swift, the pop music star, received the Grammy Award for Best Pop Album for her album "Midnights." This marked her fourth win of the Best Album award at the Grammys. However, Taylor Swift has faced criticism from environmental activists for her use of private jets. In June, two environmental activists sprayed orange paint on her luxury private jet at an airport in the UK where it was located.
