Arrest of Woman Opposing Mandatory Hijab After Confrontation with Government Agent

A woman opposing the mandatory hijab in Iran, whose recent video of a confrontation with a government agent enforcing the Islamic Republic's hijab regulations went viral on social media, has been arrested by government agents in Tehran. The human rights organization Hengaw reported on its X account on Tuesday, November 21, that the woman's name is Roshanak Molaei Alishah, and she was detained by the Islamic Republic's intelligence agencies in Tehran after posting the video on her X account. According to the report, there is no information available regarding Ms. Molaei Alishah's fate following her arrest. Recently, a video circulated on social media showing a woman walking down a street in optional attire, while a military-clad agent approached her from behind on a motorcycle and attempted to push her. However, the woman defended herself, causing the agent to fall to the ground. The continuation of the video indicates that with the intervention of several passing men and the woman's ongoing self-defense, the agent eventually got back on his motorcycle and fled the scene. The Islamic Republic has increased restrictions on individual and social freedoms for women by criminalizing non-compliance with the mandatory hijab. Official and unofficial forces have been deployed to confront women who engage in civil disobedience against this obligation in the streets. Meanwhile, civil disobedience against the mandatory hijab and violations of women's rights continue, and reports indicate an increase in the number of women who are going about in public without hijab. Additionally, the Associated Press has reported that seeing women without mandatory hijab in the streets of Iran has become commonplace. The Islamic Republic's policy of enforcing mandatory hijab has drawn widespread criticism from human rights organizations, and the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom has previously stated that the mandatory hijab in Iran is a violation of human rights. Recently, the public disrobing of a young woman in response to the violence of security forces and university Basij in Tehran sparked a wave of support reactions for her in Iran and around the world. Furthermore, there have been reports of student girls lining up for 'hijab inspections' to enter Qazvin Islamic Azad University, statements from dozens of civil activists calling for the immediate release of Ahoo Daryaee, and emphasis from numerous organizations and civil activists on the need to organize protests and strikes. The World Student Assembly has called for the immediate release of the 'girl from Science and Research,' and 200 students were prevented from entering Amir Kabir University under the pretext of not adhering to the mandatory hijab.
