Arrests Made in Connection with Suicide Bombing at Shia Mosque in Kuwait

Kuwaiti government sources reported on Saturday, July 6, the arrest of several individuals in connection with the suicide bombing that occurred on Friday at the "Imam Sadiq" mosque in the capital of the country. The Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior also announced that the owner of the vehicle that transported the suicide bomber to the mosque has been arrested. According to Reuters, the Ministry of Interior stated in a statement that the search for the driver of the vehicle that brought the suicide bomber to the "Imam Sadiq" mosque is ongoing. In the suicide attack on Friday at the Shia mosque in Kuwait's capital, at least 27 people were killed and 200 others were injured. According to the Iranian ambassador to Kuwait, two Iranian citizens were killed in the explosion, and five other Iranians were injured. Alireza Enayati, the Iranian ambassador in Kuwait, stated that Seyyed Reza Mohammadi and "Boumajid" were the two Iranians killed in the explosion, and Boumajid's body is to be transferred to the city of Abadan for burial. Enayati mentioned that Seyyed Reza Mohammadi, who worked in a grocery store in Kuwait, was originally from Lar County in Fars Province, and Boumajid, who worked in a fabric store, was originally from Ahvaz. Meanwhile, a Kuwaiti security official told Reuters that "several" individuals have been arrested in connection with the suicide bombing at the Shia mosque in the capital. According to Reuters, a funeral ceremony was held on Saturday for some of the victims of the suicide bombing at the Shia mosque in Kuwait. During this ceremony, mourners carried not only the Kuwaiti flag but also black, green, and red flags. Reportedly, the mourners chanted slogans such as "Death to ISIS." According to Reuters, Sheikh Mohammed Khaled Al-Sabah, the Kuwaiti Minister of Interior, also stated: "We will cut off the devilish hands of those who interfere in the security of our country." Meanwhile, the Islamic State group, known as ISIS, claimed responsibility for the attack on the Shia mosque in Kuwait and identified the suicide bomber as "Abu Sulayman Al-Muwahhid." This group referred to the attack on the Shia mosque in Kuwait as an attack on the "temple of apostates" and Rafidis on social media. According to Reuters, the majority of Kuwait's population is Sunni, while Shia Muslims make up about 15 to 30 percent of the country's population.
