As Hurricane 'Milton' Approaches, Biden Cancels Foreign Trips

The populous west coast of Florida, still in shock from the devastating Hurricane Helen that occurred less than two weeks ago, is now preparing for the impact of Hurricane Milton in the Tampa Bay area on Wednesday. The National Hurricane Center announced on Tuesday, October 8, that Hurricane Milton has the potential to be one of the most destructive hurricanes recorded in western and central Florida. With only one day left before Hurricane Milton reaches Florida's shores, meteorologists are warning residents to prepare for possible last-minute changes in the storm's path. U.S. President Joe Biden announced on Tuesday that he has canceled his trip to Germany and Africa due to the increasing threat of this hurricane, stating, "I really don’t think I can leave the country at this point." As the presidential elections approach in the U.S., Republicans are focusing on policies related to managing the aftermath of the storm. Former President Donald Trump claimed last week that Biden and Kamala Harris were not present in the country during Hurricane Helen in southeastern Florida, while White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated, "The White House is closely monitoring the situation." Interaction with land and various weather factors could cause this hurricane to move without warning or change its path. These small shifts, according to experts, could have significant consequences as areas previously thought to be safer will face serious risks. The Storm Prediction Center has warned that waves from this hurricane could reach heights of 3 to 4.5 meters in parts of the northern and southern Tampa Bay coast, likely flooding low-lying areas. It is also predicted that rainfall intensity in central Florida will range from 127 to 254 millimeters, increasing the risk of flash flooding. Reports indicate that this hurricane is moving towards Florida and Tampa Bay, with its speed increasing to 257 kilometers per hour. Approximately 15 million people in Florida will be affected by flooding from this hurricane, and 11 million are at risk of tropical tornadoes on Tuesday and Wednesday. Demand for fuel in Florida has surged, with those fleeing the state caught in long gas lines. Those who do not plan to leave the state are filling their gas tanks to power generators in case of power outages. The gas tracking service reported that over 14% of gas stations in the state were out of fuel on Tuesday, with much worse conditions reported in areas under mandatory evacuation orders. In Fort Myers, on the Gulf Coast, 70% of stations were out of fuel on Monday. John Congialosi, a specialist at the National Hurricane Center, stated on Tuesday, "Milton has the potential to be one of the most destructive hurricanes recorded for western central Florida." He noted that destructive winds, deadly storm surges, and heavy rainfall exceeding the storm's predicted range will expand. This hurricane took about 19 hours to transition from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane, making it the fastest hurricane reported in the Atlantic region since 2020.
