As the Gaza War Enters Its Eleventh Month, Israel Promises to Eliminate Yahya Sinwar

With tensions escalating in the region and the Gaza war entering its eleventh month, Israel has vowed to eliminate Yahya Sinwar, the new leader of the extremist group Hamas, who is said to be the mastermind behind the October 7 attacks. Sinwar has been appointed as Hamas's new leader while Israel prepares for a retaliatory strike against Iran over the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized during a speech at a military base on Wednesday that Israel is 'determined' to defend itself. He told new recruits to the Israeli army, 'We are ready both to defend and to attack.' Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army, Herzi Halevi, also pledged, 'We will find him [Sinwar], attack him, and force Hamas to find another leader.' Sinwar, who has led Hamas's military operations in Gaza since 2017, has not been seen since the October 7 attack, which was the deadliest in Israel's history. A senior Hamas official told AFP that Sinwar's appointment sends a message that the organization 'will continue on the path of resistance.' Hezbollah, a Lebanese ally of Hamas, congratulated Sinwar's appointment, stating that it shows the 'enemy' has 'failed to achieve its goals' by killing Hamas leaders and officials. Some analysts suggest that Yahya Sinwar is less inclined towards establishing a ceasefire in Gaza compared to Ismail Haniyeh and is closer to the Iranian regime.
