Assault, Murder of Indian Female Doctor and Wave of Protests; What Has Happened So Far

The violent death of a young doctor at a medical center in India has sparked a wave of protests across the country. This is the latest incident in a country where over 31,000 cases of assault have been recorded since 2022. Protests peaked over the past weekend as doctors nationwide went on a 24-hour strike, refusing to accept patients except in emergencies. Tens of thousands also demonstrated in streets across the country, demanding justice for the 31-year-old victim and the safety of women in workplaces. The incident began on August 8 at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The victim was a second-year medical student working the night shift in the pulmonary department. Shortly after midnight, she had dinner with colleagues and then decided to take a nap in the seminar hall of the college. The next day, her semi-naked body, showing signs of injury, was found lying on a blood-stained mattress. The police quickly began an investigation following the report of the incident. An autopsy report indicated that the victim had been sexually assaulted. At the crime scene, police collected potential evidence, including a Bluetooth headset. There were no CCTV cameras at the location of the incident, and the police referred to other hospital cameras to compile a list of individuals who had been in the area during that time. One of them was a man named Sanjay Roy, who was seen around the building at around 4 AM wearing a Bluetooth headset. CCTV footage showed that 40 minutes later, when Sanjay Roy left the hospital, he no longer had the headset with him. Following the investigation, police summoned all suspects, including Sanjay Roy, and after interrogations, they tested the connectivity of each suspect's mobile phone with the Bluetooth headset found at the scene. They discovered that the headset immediately connected to Sanjay Roy's mobile phone, leading to his immediate arrest. He later confessed to the crime. In response to the incident, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated, 'People are extremely angry.' He also urged the country's institutions to take crimes against women seriously and prioritize their investigation. However, Modi's statements, like the incident itself, are repetitive. Twelve years ago, he made similar remarks after a gang rape of a 23-year-old student on a moving bus in Delhi. The protests that followed that tragic incident led to stricter laws. Four of the accused were hanged seven years later while hundreds celebrated outside the prison. Yet, not much has changed since then. Many Indian women still distrust the police and the judicial system, and complaints from victims, especially those from lower social classes, remain unresolved for years, with some suspects being released on bail. Indian female doctors are particularly at greater risk. In addition to the issues faced by women in Indian society, they witness violence in the workplace and there are frequent reports of attacks by relatives of patients, especially after a patient's death. Official statistics show that a new case of assault is reported in India every 15 minutes. Women's rights activists in India emphasize that the actual number is likely much higher. The Indian Ministry of Health has promised to establish a new committee to implement security measures for the country's healthcare staff and has asked protesters to return to their workplaces. However, the Indian Medical Association and other protesters in the streets are not satisfied. They emphasize that similar committees in the past have made almost no improvements.
