Associated Press: US Congressional Leaders Reach Agreement on Federal Budget

After weeks of disagreement, US congressional leaders have finally reached an agreement on the overall spending for the current fiscal year, which could help prevent a partial shutdown of the federal government later this month. According to the Associated Press, this agreement largely pertains to spending limits for defense and domestic programs, which Congress has set as part of the debt limit suspension bill until 2025. However, the agreement grants concessions to Republican members of the House of Representatives who deemed the spending limits in the budget agreement insufficient for President Joe Biden's requested budget. Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House, stated in a letter to his colleagues on Sunday that this agreement ensures a $16 billion reduction in additional spending from a previous deal brokered by the former Speaker and the President. He noted that this agreement is about $30 billion less than what the Senate had proposed, emphasizing that 'this represents the most favorable budget agreement Republicans have achieved in over a decade.' President Joe Biden remarked that this agreement 'brings us one step closer to preventing an unnecessary government shutdown and protecting important national priorities.' According to the Associated Press, Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader, also mentioned in a brief call to his colleagues that 'this is a good deal for Democrats and the country.'
