At least 10 children killed in airstrike on school in Yemen

Doctors Without Borders reports that at least 10 children were killed in an airstrike on a school near the city of Saada in Yemen, with another 28 injured. Local officials and a group of residents stated that the airstrike was carried out by the Saudi-led coalition. Images of the school after the attack have been shared on social media; reports indicate that children were taking exams when their school was targeted. News agencies reporting on the attack say that the spokesperson for the Arab coalition has not yet responded to the incident. Doctors Without Borders confirmed the attack on Twitter, stating that the victims were aged between 8 and 15 years old. This latest airstrike comes after the suspension of UN peace talks for Yemen, which were taking place in Kuwait. The Kuwait negotiations were halted after Houthi rebels announced they were forming a council to govern the country with supporters of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh. This move faced criticism from the UN envoy for Yemen, and representatives of current President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi also stated that the talks had stopped. The United Nations had previously listed the Saudi-led coalition in June for violations of children's rights during the conflict in Yemen. However, a few days later, the UN Secretary-General's spokesperson stated that following a proposal from Riyadh, the coalition's name was temporarily removed from the list of child rights violators to reassess the cases mentioned in the recent report regarding the killing of Yemeni children. Human rights organizations strongly criticized this action by the UN. Additionally, a recent effort by the UN representative in Yemen to have the Security Council address the formation of the Houthi and Saleh government council was unsuccessful due to what was described as 'Russia's opposition to criticizing the Houthis.' At least 6,500 people have died since the beginning of the airstrikes in Yemen, about half of whom are civilians.
