At least 10 killed in armed attack on adult school in Sweden

Swedish police have reported that at least 10 people were killed during an armed attack on an adult school, and it is believed that the assailant is among the deceased. The Prime Minister of Sweden described the incident on Tuesday, February 5, as a 'painful' day for the country. Roberto Eid Forest, the head of the local police, stated in a press conference that the attacker is likely among the fatalities and investigations into other potential victims at the school are ongoing. He added that the motive of the attacker is still unclear: 'It is likely that 10 or more people died in this shooting incident. Due to the scale of the event, an exact number regarding the victims cannot be provided at this time.' Mr. Forest announced that the police believe the attacker acted alone and currently do not consider a terrorist motive likely. He also noted, 'There is still incomplete information, and it is too early to provide more details about the assailant. Operations are still ongoing, and clearer information will be available in the future.' The armed attack occurred in the city of Örebro, located 200 kilometers from Stockholm. This educational center is designated for adults who have not completed their formal education or have not achieved passing grades for higher education. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed in a message on X that he is thinking of those whose ordinary school day turned into terror. Being trapped in a classroom and fearing for one's life is a nightmare that no one should experience. Local health officials have told Reuters that several others were injured in the shooting, with some undergoing surgery. Sweden has faced a wave of shootings and explosions related to organized crime in recent years, but deadly attacks in schools are rare. According to the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention, from 2010 to 2022, a total of 10 people died in seven deadly school attacks, including an attack by a 21-year-old assailant with racist motives at a school in 2015 that resulted in the deaths of a teaching assistant and a student.
