At least 23 Pakistani soldiers killed in suicide attack by militants

In a suicide attack by militants from an Islamist group in Pakistan, at least 23 Pakistani soldiers were killed. According to the Pakistan Army, a six-member suicide squad entered a military camp in the northwest of the country on Tuesday, December 21, with a truck full of explosives and targeted the soldiers. In the ensuing armed conflict after the explosion, all attackers were killed. The army reported that the militants' attempt to enter the military camp was unsuccessful, and they carried out the suicide attack after crashing the explosive-laden truck into a guard post. The intensity of the explosion caused significant damage to the building and numerous casualties. The Pakistan Army stated that this attack occurred a day after two soldiers and 21 militants were killed in various clashes in the area. Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar, the interim Prime Minister of Pakistan, condemned the attack in a message on social media platform 'X' and expressed condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers. A Pakistani Taliban group called 'Tehrik-e-Jihad Pakistan' claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement. This emerging group has recently carried out significant attacks against government forces and the Pakistan Army. It remains unclear whether this organization is part of the main 'Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan' group, which encompasses several Islamist and sectarian factions, or if it operates independently. Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan has been fighting the Pakistani government for years, seeking to replace it with a harsh Islamic regime. The Pakistan Army has conducted several large-scale operations against militants, particularly in the 'Waziristan' region, which has historically been a stronghold for both domestic and foreign Islamist militants. Militants have increased their military attacks since last year when they ended a ceasefire with the Pakistani government.
