Atifeh Rangriz, women's rights activist, sentenced to an additional seven years in prison while on medical leave

Atifeh Rangriz, a women's rights activist and political prisoner who was sent on medical leave from Shahrud prison, has been sentenced by the Revolutionary Court to over seven additional years in prison. Hossein Taj, Ms. Rangriz's lawyer, announced that the Damghan Revolutionary Court sentenced his client to seven years for the charge of 'forming a Telegram group (Gago Translation)' and to seven months in prison along with a two-year ban on online activities for the charge of 'propaganda against the regime.' Mr. Taj wrote on the social media platform X that this sentence was issued while his client was on medical leave, and the extension of this leave for continued treatment of her heart condition was denied. The new charge against Ms. Rangriz relates to a Telegram group where she published her translations of the works of Verónica Gago, an Argentine feminist theorist. Last year, Ms. Rangriz was sentenced by the Shahrud Revolutionary Court to two years, seven months, and 16 days for 'collaborating and being a member of opposition groups' and to seven months and 16 days for 'propaganda against the regime.' She has been imprisoned in Shahrud since July of this year and was sent on medical leave about three weeks ago due to her deteriorating health. Ms. Rangriz has been arrested and imprisoned several times in recent years.
