Attack by Plainclothes Agents on Girls' Dormitory in Tabriz - 2003-06-17

According to an internet site report, on Tuesday at 9 PM, plainclothes agents attacked the girls' student dormitory in Tabriz. Prior to this attack, the female students had gathered in the dormitory courtyard located on Zafaranieh Street and were chanting political slogans. The new slogan of this demonstration was: 'O Tabriz, proud, support, support.' Following the attack by the plainclothes agents, which occurred in the presence of law enforcement forces, it was rumored that three female students were seriously injured. Simultaneously, plainclothes agents also attacked the boys' student dormitory on Vali Asr Street. Residents around the university and the streets leading to the student dormitories, especially Abresan Street and the area around Saat Square, opened their doors to shelter the students. Additionally, the youth and teenagers of Tabriz supported the students by chanting slogans in the streets. ISNA reported that despite some unrest in certain universities, the process of holding exams at Tabriz University continues as normal, despite some nighttime activities in the dormitory and inside the university. According to a reporter from the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA), following some unrest in the Tabriz University dormitory and the writing of slogans against officials that occurred at night, these instances were cleared by university security agents. It is noteworthy that, considering the meeting of university presidents scheduled for this week at Tabriz University, university officials refrained from commenting on the holding or non-holding of the meeting.
