Attack on Abdullah Momeni with a Machete

The son of Abdullah Momeni reported an assassination attempt against his father by two individuals armed with a machete on the evening of Thursday, January 25, in front of their home. Abdullah Momeni is the spokesperson for the Graduates Organization of Iran (Advar Tahkim Vahdat). Hamidreza Momeni told the Kalemeh website that the assailants were riding a '1000cc motorcycle, approximately 20 years old, dressed in dark clothing with beards and a style associated with notorious pressure and extremist groups.' His son added that the motorcyclists approached his father asking for an address and then, after following him, kicked Abdullah Momeni from behind. Hamidreza Momeni stated that 'my father fell to the ground after this blow, and the assailant who had entered the building immediately bent down with the machete intending to strike my father's chest, but my father, while still on the ground, kicked him, which reduced the force of the blow and only caused a superficial injury to my father's chest.' According to Abdullah Momeni's son, despite his father's wallet, personal computer, and mobile phone being on the ground, the assailants ignored them and after attacking him, said: 'You are done, you are a man, and you are free.' Hamidreza Momeni added that the incident was reported to the police, and 'afterward, a complaint was filed with the relevant authorities following a visit to the forensic doctor and examination and documentation of the injuries.' Abdullah Momeni is a former student activist, spokesperson for the Graduates Organization of Iran (Advar Tahkim Vahdat), and a member of Mehdi Karroubi's presidential campaign in the 2009 elections. He was arrested after the elections and spent several years in prison but has been free for some time now. During his imprisonment, he reported severe torture by his interrogators for forced confessions in a letter to Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.
