Attack on Ain al-Asad Base in Iraq; Several American Personnel Suffered 'Minor Injuries'

Reuters reported, citing an American official, that according to initial assessments, during the attack on the Ain al-Asad base in western Iraq on Saturday, January 30, several American personnel suffered 'minor injuries.' As of the time of this report, the number of injured Americans from this attack has not been specified. The American official, who requested anonymity, added that one member of the Iraqi security forces was also 'severely' injured in this attack. According to him, initial reports indicate that the attack on the Ain al-Asad base was likely carried out using 'ballistic missiles.' He noted that investigations into this attack are ongoing and added that there is also a possibility that the attack was conducted with 'rockets.' Meanwhile, news agencies affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also reported, citing sources linked to the Islamic Republic in Iraq, about 'rocket attacks' on the Ain al-Asad base. The attack on the Ain al-Asad base occurred hours after attacks attributed to Israel on a building housing members of the Revolutionary Guard in Damascus, Syria, which has so far confirmed the deaths of five members of this military force of the Islamic Republic. Although Iranian-affiliated militants have carried out numerous attacks on American bases in the region in recent years, following the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7 against Israel and the subsequent Israeli assault on Gaza aimed at destroying this Tehran-affiliated group, the frequency and intensity of attacks by Iranian proxy groups on American and Israeli targets have significantly increased. Previously, on January 7, six informed sources told Reuters that Israel had launched an unprecedented wave of deadly attacks in Syria targeting cargo trucks, infrastructure, and individuals associated with the transfer of Iranian-made weapons to its proxy forces in the region. These sources, including a Syrian army intelligence officer and a commander of a regional coalition supporting Damascus, stated that Israel has changed its strategy following the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack. According to these sources, although Israel has been targeting Iranian-related objectives in Syria for years, it is now conducting deadlier and more frequent airstrikes on Iranian air defense systems and weapons transfers in Syria.
