Attack on Guards at Kabul Military Academy Leaves Several Dead and Injured

The Afghan Ministry of Defense reports that in an attack by assailants on a checkpoint near the Marshal Fahim Defense and Military Academy in Kabul, at least two soldiers were killed and 10 others injured. The group known as 'Islamic State' has claimed responsibility for this attack. This incident occurs just two days after a bombing that resulted in 103 deaths in a central area of Kabul. In recent hours, Afghan security officials and news agencies have reported that the Marshal Fahim Defense and Military Academy in Kabul was targeted by 'assailants'. A police spokesperson stated that it is unclear whether the academy was attacked from outside or if the events are an internal matter. According to a report by Agence France-Presse citing an Afghan security official, the attack took place early on the ninth of Bahman and 'some of the assailants have been killed'. The security official stated that the assailants 'failed to' enter the academy. Tolo News and Reuters reported that since five in the morning, sounds of explosions and gunfire have been heard in the academy or its surroundings. A Tolo News reporter mentioned that police forces have blocked all roads around the academy. One resident of the surrounding areas told Reuters that the sounds of explosions were audible for at least an hour. This Afghan citizen noted that in addition to the sounds from larger explosions, smaller explosions were also resonating in the area. The attack on the Marshal Fahim Academy occurred just a few days after a suicide bombing by an attacker in a bomb-laden ambulance in a central Kabul area, which left 103 dead. On the seventh of Bahman, an attacker passed through a checkpoint at the Presidential Palace and detonated their vehicle near another checkpoint. The Taliban claimed responsibility for this attack, which resulted in hundreds of casualties.
