Attack on Iranian Bus in Turkey Leaves One Dead

Reports from news agencies indicate that unidentified individuals attacked an Iranian bus in Turkey, resulting in one death. Tehran officials have urged Iranian citizens to avoid land travel to Turkey under the current circumstances. The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported on Friday, August 7, that the attack on the Iranian bus left one dead and three injured. The report states that armed assailants attacked the Iranian bus around 10 AM on Friday, which had entered Turkish territory from the Bazargan border and was en route to the city of Van via Dogubayazit. The report includes statements from Hossein Ghasemi, Iran's consul in Erzurum, who said that one person was severely injured in the head and ultimately died in the hospital, but the identity and nationality of this individual have not yet been confirmed. However, Mr. Ghasemi later stated in an interview with Iran's state radio and television that the deceased was named 'Davood Sari,' who was reportedly the assistant driver. He also advised Iranian citizens to 'avoid unnecessary travel to this country or use air travel to this country due to the increase in terrorist activities and the insecurity of border routes in Turkey.' The state radio and television report identified the attackers as members of the PKK, the Kurdistan Workers' Party. However, IRNA emphasized that 'no group has claimed responsibility for this attack yet, and security forces are continuing operations in the area to apprehend the assailants.' Turkey has recently witnessed renewed clashes between the PKK and its army, resulting in dozens of casualties. Additionally, last Friday, a train traveling from Ankara to Tehran was attacked, although none of the passengers were harmed. Last Tuesday, an explosion occurred in the gas pipeline from Iran to Turkey, which Turkish officials and media attributed to the PKK.
