Attack on UN Vehicles in Southern Lebanon; Israel-Hezbollah Clashes Continue

The United Nations announced on Thursday that a peacekeeper was injured in an attack by a group of young men on its patrol vehicles in southern Lebanon. The young men attempted to prevent the vehicles from moving in their village. According to Reuters, this incident occurred on Wednesday night. A security source stated that the injured man is an Indonesian soldier. The UN peacekeeping forces stationed in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, reported that one vehicle was damaged in the attack. The organization called on Lebanese authorities to investigate the incident and prosecute those responsible. Candice Ardil, a UNIFIL spokesperson, also mentioned that in another incident on Thursday morning, residents of an area briefly blocked the path of a peacekeeping convoy heading to the eastern UNIFIL headquarters and allowed it to continue after a short discussion. A Lebanese security source said that a group of men struck UNIFIL vehicles with sticks and stones. The reason for these actions is unclear, but in previous similar incidents, locals have opposed the use of UNIFIL peacekeepers' military vehicles to pass through residential areas. Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal reported that Iranian-backed militants and Israeli forces exchanged fire across Israel's northern border. Israeli leaders have warned that time is running out for diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions in the region. Benny Gantz, a senior member of Israel's war cabinet, stated on Wednesday that time for a diplomatic solution is running out. He said, 'If the world and the Lebanese government do not take action to prevent fire on northern Israeli residents and to distance Hezbollah from the borders, the Israeli army will do so.' The Israeli army announced on Thursday that it responded to Hezbollah's fire towards Israel with return fire. On Wednesday, in a separate Israeli airstrike while the country was engaged with Hezbollah, three people were killed, including two Lebanese-Australian citizens. An Iranian-backed Iraqi militia also claimed responsibility for flying a drone carrying explosives, which crashed in an area of the Golan Heights annexed by Israel. The Israeli army intercepted another drone from Lebanon in northern Israel on Thursday.
