Attack on US Embassy in Lebanon; Attacker Arrested with ISIS Insignia

On Wednesday, June 6, the US Department of State announced that an individual accused of shooting at the US Embassy in Lebanon was wearing an ISIS insignia. Matthew Miller, the spokesperson for the State Department, stated that the attacker was arrested after the incident around 8:30 AM local time, saying, "We are aware that the arrested individual was wearing an ISIS insignia, but we are conducting a thorough investigation into his true motives in cooperation with Lebanese authorities." The US Embassy in Beirut also released a statement saying that the shooting occurred with a "small firearm" near the entrance of the US Embassy and that "thanks to the swift response of the host country's security forces" and the embassy's security team, the facilities and members of the US Embassy in Beirut are now completely safe. Reuters reported on Wednesday morning, citing the Lebanese Army, that an armed individual shot at the US Embassy in Beirut. The Lebanese Army announced that the attacker, who is a Syrian citizen, was injured by the fire of the officers and was transferred to the hospital for treatment. A security source also told Reuters that one member of the embassy's security team was injured in this attack. The US Embassy is located in northern Beirut in a "very secure" area with multiple checkpoints along the entrance route. The embassy's location was changed after a suicide attack in 1983. In September, there was also a shooting near the embassy, but no injuries were reported. Since October of last year, Lebanon has been the scene of clashes between Hezbollah, a group supported by the Iranian government, and Israel, coinciding with the Gaza war. The United States has consistently emphasized its efforts to prevent escalating tensions in the region, especially between Israel and Hezbollah. In response to Hezbollah's actions, Netanyahu threatened Lebanon with a "harsh action" from Israel. Following the killing of a member of the "Quds Force" in an attack attributed to Israel in Aleppo, the commander of the IRGC promised a "response." Jordan discovered one of the largest drug shipments at its border with Saudi Arabia. Hezbollah's continued attacks on northern Israel have drawn warnings from Netanyahu, and the US has expressed concern. Netanyahu warned Lebanon, stating that Israel would confront the ongoing escalation of tensions from Hezbollah with full force.
