Attackers on Saudi Embassy in Iran to be Tried on July 19

Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, the spokesperson for Iran's judiciary, announced the trial of 48 attackers on the Saudi Arabian embassy in Tehran, stating that four of them will be tried in a special clerical court. All individuals have been released on bail. According to a report on Wednesday, June 15, from Tasnim news agency, Mr. Mohseni Ejei declared the trial date for these individuals to be July 19 of this year at Branch 1060 of Tehran's Criminal Court. This judicial official had previously stated that an indictment had been issued for 48 individuals in connection with the attack on the Saudi embassy in Tehran. Mr. Ejei expressed ignorance about the details of the case being handled in the special clerical court, saying that 'the defendants related to the judiciary have not yet been tried.' According to this judicial authority, 'no one is in custody in this case, and the defendants have been released on bail.' This announcement comes despite the Minister of Culture stating on April 29 that all these attackers were imprisoned. Mr. Jannati had claimed that 'all the perpetrators of this attack have been arrested and are in prison, facing punishment.' These individuals, along with others protesting the execution of Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, a Shia cleric in Saudi Arabia, attacked the embassy in December of last year, setting parts of the embassy building on fire. These attacks and protests in Mashhad also led to an attack on the Saudi consulate, causing damage to parts of the consulate building. In response to these attacks, Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic relations with Iran. Ali Khamenei and some other officials of the Islamic Republic condemned the attacks on the embassy and consulate shortly after the incident, leading to the arrest of several individuals in this case. Hassan Kordmihan, a cleric from the city of Karaj, was among those arrested and identified as one of the leaders of the attackers. Mohseni Ejei stated without naming him that 'the arrested individual was not only involved in this incident but also gave some orders.' The judiciary spokesperson had previously mentioned on April 10 that 'a few individuals' related to the attack on the Saudi embassy were being reviewed in the special clerical court. He did not provide details regarding the identity of these individuals but stated that an indictment had been issued for 48 people in this case.
