Australian Media Report on Refugee Children's Suicide Attempts in Nauru

The Australian Minister for Home Affairs announced that the first boat carrying refugees has arrived in the country after more than four years. Meanwhile, a report from an Australian television network indicates that refugee children in Nauru are attempting suicide. According to the Associated Press, Peter Dutton, Australia's Minister for Home Affairs, stated on Monday, September 5, that a fishing boat with a group of refugees from Vietnam has reached Australia and added that the government is working with agencies to ensure their return to their home country. Earlier, Mark Ryan, the Police Minister of Queensland, said on Sunday, September 4, that the boat carried 15 individuals who were detained upon arrival. The report states that Vietnamese refugees were previously accepted as asylum seekers in Australia, but Australian officials now stop and detain boats carrying Vietnamese refugees. According to this report, the former Australian government announced in July 2013 that refugees arriving by boat would not be allowed to reside in Australia. Since then, single male refugees have been sent to Papua New Guinea, and other refugees to Nauru. Nauru and Papua New Guinea are two countries in the Pacific, often mentioned in Persian-language news reports regarding refugees and their fates. The camps in Nauru and Papua New Guinea house hundreds of refugees, including women and children. Based on estimates from the Australian Parliament in recent years, Iranians constitute the largest group of refugees in both regions. Reports indicate that the conditions in the camps where these refugees live are inadequate. The Australian television network ABC reported on Monday that refugee children sent to Nauru are self-harming and seeking ways to commit suicide. This report is based on leaked documents from Australian immigration officials. Previously, a 14-year-old refugee attempted self-immolation by pouring gasoline on himself about two months ago. Another report indicated that a 10-year-old refugee child attempted suicide two months ago. In this context, Vernon Reynolds, a former child psychologist who worked in Nauru for about two years, told ABC that he is concerned that some refugee children may lose their lives. In response to these reports, the Australian Department of Home Affairs stated that the country has allocated significant medical and health assistance to refugees in Nauru. The situation of refugees in Papua New Guinea and Nauru has led to protests in Australia, with thousands of Australians demonstrating in major cities on July 30 against the government's anti-refugee policies. Meanwhile, the Associated Press noted that the United States has agreed to accept 1,250 refugees from Papua New Guinea and Nauru.
