Awarding the 'Charlemagne Prize' to Zelensky in Germany; Unexpected Visit of the Ukrainian President to France

The office of the French President announced that the two sides would talk about "Ukraine's military and humanitarian needs" and "long-term prospects for returning to peace in Europe." According to the French President's office, Macron would again emphasize France and Europe's "unwavering support" for Ukraine against the Russian invasion during this meeting. Before traveling to France, Zelensky visited Germany. In a meeting with Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor of Germany, Zelensky discussed plans to counter Russian attacks. He also mentioned that these plans are not aimed at attacking Russian territory but "to liberate areas occupied by Russia within Ukraine's international borders." Prior to Zelensky's trip to Paris, he was awarded the "International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen" in a ceremony held in the city of Aachen, Germany, under tight security, as one of the most prestigious and oldest political awards in Europe. This ceremony took place on Sunday with the presence of Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, Mateusz Morawiecki, Prime Minister of Poland, and Olaf Scholz, Chancellor of Germany. The Charlemagne Prize committee explained that the award was given to Zelensky because he and the people of Ukraine are not only defending their national sovereignty but are also "fighting for freedom and European values." Ursula von der Leyen stated at the award ceremony: "Ukraine embodies everything that the idea of European life is built upon: courage of convictions, the struggle for values and freedom, commitment to peace and unity."
