Bahraini Security Forces Raid Home of Opposition Leader

On Tuesday, May 23, Bahraini security forces raided the home of Sheikh Isa Qassim, the opposition leader, and arrested several of his supporters. Reuters reported this news citing civil activists and a security official. Although Sheikh Qassim was not among those arrested, the raid could potentially escalate tensions in Bahrain, just days after U.S. President Donald Trump stated during his visit to Saudi Arabia that relations between Washington and Sunni rulers would improve. These countries have long been accused of human rights violations. Civil activists reported to Reuters that a protester was shot dead by security forces during protests against the raid in the village where Sheikh Qassim resides, and several others were injured. A security official told the news agency that the raid in Diraz occurred after receiving information that several fugitives linked to terrorist activities and the murder of a police officer were hiding in the village. The Bahraini Ministry of Interior stated that 50 individuals who were wanted were arrested during this operation. The raid took place two days after a Bahraini court accused Sheikh Qassim of collecting money from illegal sources and money laundering, sentencing him to one year of suspended imprisonment. A Bahraini security official stated that the operation was not aimed at Sheikh Qassim and added that he was not arrested. Images and videos shared by internet users show 20 masked police officers gathering outside a house, which they claim was the site of the raid. Reuters stated it could not verify the authenticity of these images. Abestam Al-Sayeq, a resident of the nearby village of Bani Jamra, told Reuters that mosques had called for street protests in support of Sheikh Qassim. The Sunni Al Khalifa monarchy in Bahrain crushed a Shiite uprising for reforms and power-sharing in 2011. The government claims that the opposition seeks to overthrow the ruling regime and that Iran is involved in the unrest in Bahrain. Tehran has consistently denied such accusations.
