Baltimore Prosecutor: Freddie Gray Killed While in Police Custody

The Baltimore prosecutor in Maryland, USA, announced on Friday, April 30, that Freddie Gray, a young Black man who was in police custody in the city, was killed, and arrest warrants have been issued for six police officers in this regard. According to reports, Marilyn Mosby, the Baltimore prosecutor, stated at a press conference that criminal investigations and medical examinations indicate that Freddie Gray was killed while in police custody, and therefore, six police officers involved in his arrest have been charged with involuntary manslaughter. Freddie Gray's death, due to injuries to his spine and spinal cord that occurred ten days ago, sparked protests in various cities across America, with violence accompanying the protests in Baltimore. Freddie Gray was arrested on April 12 and fell into a coma during his transfer to the police station, dying a week later. The Baltimore prosecutor also stated that Freddie Gray's arrest by three police officers was illegal, as the reason for his arrest was carrying a knife, which was not illegal. Marilyn Mosby also told the youth of Baltimore that she would not rest until justice is served on their behalf. Meanwhile, CNN broadcast images of people celebrating the Baltimore prosecutor's statements in the streets. According to the network, plans for protest marches have been organized in New York, Chicago, Seattle, Dallas, and Oakland simultaneously with the prosecutor's statements. Local officials in Baltimore had previously declared a curfew to counter violent actions in the city, starting at 10 PM. Before the curfew began, police asked demonstrators to return to their homes. The Washington Post reported that the new peaceful protests in Baltimore, two days after the violence and looting that shook the city, have once again drawn attention to the main issue: the death of the young Black man after police custody.
