Ban Ki-moon: Any Form of Violence Against Women Must Be Punished

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, states that the goal is to stop violence against women globally by 2030, and any form of violence against them must face punishment. Ban Ki-moon, on December 4, stated in New York that if we unite, men and women, leaders of governments, business communities, and social action leaders, there will be no obstacles in the way. In particular, women will be able to live without fear of violence against themselves. Mr. Ban has said he has been working to encourage the UN Security Council to take a greater role in improving the status of women, peace, and security. He added, 'But if we are serious about ending violence against women, including ending extremism accompanied by violence, we must increase our efforts in the area of women's rights.' November 25 (December 4) is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which has been designated since 1981 with the aim of uniting and creating global joint efforts in this area. On November 25, 1960, three sisters named Maria, Patria, and Antonia Mirabal were killed by agents of Rafael Trujillo, the former dictator of the Dominican Republic, and this date is also considered the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. According to UN assessments, one in three women will experience sexual or physical violence in their lifetime. In Iran, the death rate among women due to violence is equal to the death rate from cancer. Nevertheless, Iranian officials say that less than 35% of domestic violence cases are reported to the police. Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary-General, states that his fundamental efforts are focused on increasing women's participation in UN activities and has called on world leaders to employ more women in administrative and law enforcement agencies, which will reduce the fear of other women in reporting violence.
