Beloved French Singer Charles Aznavour Passes Away at 94

Charles Aznavour, the beloved French singer who rose to fame with the support of Edith Piaf and captured the hearts of millions with his romantic songs and captivating voice, passed away at the age of 94. His spokesperson announced this news on Monday, October 1, stating that Mr. Aznavour died Sunday night at his home in southeastern France. Charles Aznavour, who was referred to by some as the 'Frank Sinatra of France,' was born in 1924 as 'Shahnour Vaghinak Aznavourian' in a Armenian family in Paris. Over 100 million copies of his works have been sold in more than 80 countries, with some of his most famous songs including 'La Bohème' and 'Comme un enfant.' He began his artistic career by presenting his music and songs to French artists of the 1940s and 1950s, including Edith Piaf, Maurice Chevalier, and Charles Trenet. He discovered his songwriting talent while performing in cabarets with pianist Pierre Roche. In the years following World War II, Edith Piaf, recognizing their talent, took them to perform in America and Canada. During these years, Charles Aznavour wrote some of Edith Piaf's most famous songs. His father was also a singer who worked in a restaurant, and his mother was an actress. In an autobiography he wrote titled 'Aznavour by Aznavour,' he mentions that after a period of trying to play the role of a tough guy with his friends, he was pushed onto the stage one night to sing. He adds, 'It was there that I was inspired. I saw girls looking at me with tearful eyes and drooping lips more than when I played horrible roles. I was 15 or 16 years old, but I understood very well.' In later years, Charles Aznavour was praised by his fans for his extraordinary storytelling ability and his raw, unrefined voice that was not considered beautiful but was full of emotion and capability. In his autobiography, he writes, 'The type of voice I have fits well with the songs I sing.' At the same time, his ability to sing in French, Spanish, Italian, English, and German was also significant.
