Bernie Sanders Announces Candidacy for the U.S. Presidential Election

Senator Bernie Sanders, whose candidacy and campaign in 2016 transformed the Democratic Party's politics, announced his candidacy for the 2020 presidential election on Tuesday, February 19. Describing himself as a democratic socialist, he wrote in an email to his supporters: "Our campaign's goal is not just to defeat Donald Trump. According to the Associated Press, Bernie Sanders, who advocates for progressive programs like universal healthcare and free higher education, surprised the establishment of the Democratic Party in 2016 with a relatively successful campaign against Hillary Clinton. Although Clinton ultimately secured the Democratic nomination, Sanders' campaign laid the groundwork for the party's shift to the left, which has become the dominant trend during Donald Trump's presidency. The Associated Press states that the question now is whether Bernie Sanders will succeed among the current Democratic candidates, most of whom have adopted and promoted his policies. In 2016, Sanders was the only progressive candidate competing against Hillary Clinton. It should not be forgotten that Bernie Sanders is a formidable opponent for the Democratic nomination. He garnered over 13 million votes in the 2016 primaries and won several states. He began his campaign with a nationwide organization and has previously proven that he can run his campaign with small donations from ordinary voters. In an interview with CBS News, Sanders stated, "We will win. We will organize a grassroots movement that is unprecedented in American history, and through this, we will change the political and economic life of the country." He described his candidacy as a continuation of his activities in 2016 and noted that the Democratic Party has now adopted his proposals from that campaign, which have become mainstream political issues in America. The Associated Press adds that this year, Sanders faces competitors in the Democratic primary who will make his victory difficult. One important issue is Sanders' success in competing against candidates with very similar platforms. For example, Elizabeth Warren, the Democratic senator from Massachusetts, who has recently launched her campaign, has garnered significant support in several states. Immediately after announcing his candidacy, Sanders appointed Brendan Summers, who was in charge of his 2016 campaign in Iowa, as the head of his organizing committee. Other officials from his previous campaign have also expressed their readiness to collaborate with this committee. Several Democratic politicians, including Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, John Delaney, and Julian Castro, have officially announced their candidacies, and it is expected that others, including Joe Biden, the former Vice President, and Beto O'Rourke, the former Texas congressman, will join them. Despite Bernie Sanders' surprising success in the 2016 campaign and his recent activities to prepare for his candidacy, it remains uncertain how much support he can attract from non-white voters.
