Bernie Sanders Defends Joe Biden's Continued Candidacy in Election Race

Bernie Sanders, the left-leaning independent senator from the United States, has called for the Democratic Party to support Joe Biden's continued candidacy in this year's presidential election through a published note. Sanders, who was Biden's rival in the Democratic primary four years ago, has defended the U.S. President amid increasing pressure from some party members for Biden to withdraw. In the note published on Saturday, July 13, in the opinion section of the New York Times, he wrote: 'Enough! Mr. Biden may not be the ideal candidate, but he will be the candidate and should be.' He also urged Democrats to stop 'whining and complaining' about their nominee in the race against Donald Trump. Following Biden's poor performance in the first debate against Trump, some prominent Democratic Party members and financial supporters of the 81-year-old Biden have called for him to step down and allow another candidate to enter the race. They fear that Biden's continued poor performance, which has seen him lag behind his Republican rival in polls, could pave the way for a Trump presidency. However, Bernie Sanders, the senator from Vermont, acknowledges that while he has serious disagreements with Biden on some issues and understands concerns about Biden's age, attention must also be paid to the successes of the U.S. President. Sanders wrote in his note: 'I know. Mr. Biden is old, prone to gaffes, walks slowly, and had a very bad debate with Mr. Trump. But I also know this: the presidential election is not an entertainment contest that starts or ends with a 90-minute debate.' This leftist politician, who is popular among American youth, referred to Biden as a 'good and decent Democratic president' who has a record of 'real achievements.' Sanders stated: 'For the sake of our children and future generations, he must win.' Meanwhile, Peter Welch, a Democratic senator from Vermont, has explicitly called for Biden to withdraw from the presidential election in a note for the Washington Post, becoming the first Democratic senator to take such a public stance. In recent days, Biden has repeatedly stated that he has no intention of withdrawing from the election race.
