Biden Administration's Secretary of State: If U.S. Aid to Ukraine Decreases, Other Countries Will Continue Support

Amid concerns about a potential reduction in U.S. aid to Ukraine if Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, returns to the White House, Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that Ukraine is on track to stand on its own. According to the Associated Press, Blinken said on Friday that even if the United States under a different president stops its assistance to Kyiv, more than 20 other countries have pledged to continue their support for Ukraine. Speaking at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado among policymakers and experts, he directly addressed the possibility of Trump winning the November 5, 2024 election and the potential reduction of U.S. commitments to Ukraine. Under President Joe Biden, the United States has been the most significant supporter of Ukraine in its defense against Russia's military aggression, which began over two years ago. Washington has provided billions of dollars in financial and military aid to Kyiv. Trump's positions on this issue have varied between criticizing Biden's approach to such support and the necessity of backing Kyiv against Moscow's aggression; however, his deputy, J.D. Vance, has openly called for halting this aid. In another part of his remarks on Friday, Blinken stated that any new government must consider the strong bipartisan support in Congress for Ukraine to counter Vladimir Putin's efforts to expand Moscow's territory and influence. The Biden Secretary of State noted that 'any government has the opportunity to formulate its policy,' referring to the security agreements between the United States and more than 20 other allies, including some NATO partners, Japan, and the European Union with Ukraine. He said that while we may withdraw from these agreements, there are twenty other countries that will continue them. Blinken further emphasized that Ukraine is on a path to ensure it can stand on its own militarily, economically, and democratically.
