Biden and Harris Welcome Freed Americans Upon Arrival in the United States

Three Americans imprisoned in Russia, who were released during a prisoner exchange between the U.S., Western countries, and Russia, arrived in the United States on Friday morning, August 12. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris welcomed them at a military base near Washington, D.C. Upon the arrival of Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, Paul Whelan, a U.S. Navy veteran, and Alsu Kurmashova, a Russian-American journalist from Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Tatar-Bashkir service, several family members were also present. As the three exited the plane, where Biden and Harris stood waiting at the steps, the attendees cheered for them. Family members of the American prisoners attended a ceremony at the White House alongside Joe Biden before their return to U.S. soil. Biden described the extensive prisoner exchange between Russia, the U.S., and several other countries at the special White House ceremony as a 'diplomatic masterpiece' and a conclusion to the 'suffering' of prisoners held in Russia. The prisoners released under the agreement between the U.S. and its allies on one side and Russia on the other represent a diverse mix. One had been imprisoned for five and a half years, while another had been incarcerated for only a few months in Russian prisons. Some are seasoned journalists or political activists, while others were imprisoned merely for opposing the war in Ukraine. The youngest among them is 19 years old, and the oldest is 71. In many cases, the charges against these Americans, including Evan Gershkovich and Alsu Kurmashova, have been described as fabricated or overtly political by their employers or the U.S. government. Who were released in the extensive prisoner exchange between Russia and the West? Some of the sentences issued are much heavier than what legal experts typically know. Among the Russians released from prisons in Europe and the U.S. are an individual accused of espionage, individuals accused of hacking internet networks, and another who murdered a Georgian citizen of Chechen descent in broad daylight in Berlin. All of these individuals, 26 from seven different countries, were released on Thursday, August 11, through Turkish mediation in the largest prisoner exchange between Russia and the West since the end of the Cold War. Previously, the largest prisoner exchange after the Cold War occurred in 2010, involving 14 individuals. In that exchange, the U.S. released 10 Russian citizens, including Anna Chapman, while Russia released four individuals, including Sergei Skripal, a Russian military intelligence officer convicted of espionage for Britain.
